Does Hype Ever Put You Off A Book?
Let’s get this out of the way early: I haven’t read The Fault In Our Stars and despite being a John Green fan, I’m a little scared to take the plunge.
The book has all the makings of something I would love; it’s Young Adult with subject matter that promises both the feels and a witty edge. Yet it’s the absolutely fanatical following the book has amassed that’s putting me off.
Case in point, this unbiased review from a fan on Goodreads:
“WARNING: This book will cause severe heart obliteration and soul crushing. Proceed with caution.”
It quickly went from something on my ‘To Read List’ to a book that the whole world is promising is going to change my life and make me ugly-cry whenever someone so much as mentions the title. And that’s a lot of pressure for 300+ pages. Again, here’s an example:
“This book was amazing and terrible and heart wrenching and hilarious. It was everything at once, making it that much more beautiful and difficult to read.”
My expectations are now sky-high, so much so that, like with other books (Twilight and The Hunger Games I’m looking at you) I know I’ll be eagerly reading it just waiting for that miracle moment to strike and if it’s anything less than perfection I’ll just be disappointed. Yes, I’ll probably love it, but I don’t want the hype to ruin it before I even begin. Similarly I could go out and find the ‘meh’ reviews that must exist, but again I don’t want to go in hating it either. My ideal scenario would be to go back and avoid anyone mentioning it to me ever.
With the Fault In Our Stars film coming out soon I know the fandom is set to explode with glee, and as a self-confessed fangirl (Harry Potter, Batman, Harley Quinn to name a few) there’s some prime geeking-out opportunities I’m missing by not being onboard.
And that’s where I’m looking at you guys: Anyone else worried to read the ‘best-selling’, ‘voice of a generation’, ‘will give you all the feels ever’ YA book of the year? Or are you just going to spam me with TFIOS in the comments until I read it?
Also, are there any other books or film franchises that you’ve been a little intimidated to read/watch because so many people are screaming that it’ll change your life?
