While Black Friday might still be fairly new for us Brits, I still started getting bombarded with emails several weeks ago. ‘Start early’, ‘Get ahead of the deals’, ‘BUY EVERYTHING NOW OR YOU WILL NEVER FIND TRUE HAPPINESS.’
Now I love a bargain as much as the next person, (actually, I probably love it a bit more as my bank balance would tell you), but this year I’m going to try and put my pennies to slightly better use.
Yes, I’ll still be keeping an eye out for any deals from my favourite bigger brands, but I’m not going to buy a new laptop or give in to the pressure of buying huge amounts for huge prices just because the telly tells me I’d be stupid not to. Firstly, because I’ll be spending most of Black Friday on a plane travelling home and thus, temptation has mercifully been partly removed. But mainly, because there are so many gorgeous small businesses out there who I could be supporting instead. Ones who might struggle to give whopping big discounts at this time of year, but who deserve just as much attention.
So this year, I’ve popped products from all of the below beauties on my Christmas list and will be making a conscious effort to share more of my favourite makers over the festive season.
Here are just a few of the designers, makers and retailers you can shop small with, in no particular order. Go and give ’em a look and let me know who else should be on my radar.
Who are they? A husband and wife team selling fun, bold and bright prints, pins and clothing. If you see someone rocking a colourful seagull on Instagram, DODO are probably the geniuses behind it.
My favourite product: This pink Beyoncé Gull jumper. I mean, have you ever seen anything as fantastic as this?
Who are they? A regular mama, cat mama and all-round wonderful human being, Elle creates pins, patches and cards featuring adorable animals, Harry Potter, and planets.
My favourite product: Currently eyeing up this Happy Sunshine lapel pin to add to my moon and stars collection.
Who are they? Makers of beautifully British leather handbags and purses, including quirky designs like books, biscuits and cats.
My favourite product: I’m already lucky enough to own the Jammy Dodger and Poptart bags, which get comments every single time I wear them. Next on my wishlist is this Bookworm Shoulder Bag.
Who are they? Lorelai’s a jewellery designer with a love of big, bright colours and clashing prints. She makes wonderfully kitsch earrings and necklaces that make a statement.
My favourite product: I’ve recently discovered this maker and immediately wanted to buy everything. If I HAD to choose, I’d pick this Happy Shark necklace, which now comes in GLITTER.
5) Nikki McWilliams
Who are they? A designer from Scotland who created the extremely Instagram-worthy range of biscuit cushions. Nikki now lets you proudly display your love of biccies with patches, pins, pouches and more.
My favourite product: I’ve got my eye on this cheery yellow NICE biscuit cushion. I think it’d look pretty nice (sorry) on my sofa.
Ah I wish I had room for so many more of my favourites! I could’ve rambled on for ages about my favourite makers, so I’ll hopefully be doing more of these features in the future. Sound good? Who are some of your favourite small businesses/makers/designers who should make the next list?
